"Dragonslayer"- Bad name?: 2015-06-14 01:01:55

So I'm a part of a small indie game development company, and we're developing a retro-style RPG for the PC. The goal of this game is to explore, gather equipment and weapons, then fight a huge battle against a dragon to win. (Yeah, it's a bit cliche, but so what)
Since we're planning on selling this game on Steam, we obviously need a good name for it, and it was temporarily named "Dragonslayer". But now that we are getting deeper into development, we need to finalize a name, and we are conflicted. One group of the company wants to keep this name, while the other (the group I am in) wants to brainstorm a new, unique name.

"Dragonslayer" seems like the most generic name ever to me. It seems like it would do poorly because it would sound to others like a crappy little browser game. I'm getting frustrated with the company here and I'm wondering what the Warlight community thinks because I just don't know what to do anymore. Am I wrong to think that this is a stupid, tasteless name that would result in failure?
Thanks for your time

Isn't it?

Anyhow, list some other suggestions - for now, I'm on Dragonslayer side. If you want to be "Unique", name is "The Behemoth's Slayer"

Well that was uncalled for.

This whole thing just reminds me of the Warlight-Warzone thing. Warzone is a cruddy generic name and that's why everybody is against the change...

Warzone being generic is what it's intended to be, the name is so we get more traffic

If you have fear of it being a crapply little browser game, it's most likely going to be a crapply little browser game. You said it's cliche yourself.

I don't think you understand the stories if you don't understand why it is Zeldas Legend :P.

Back on topic:
All I can see from this is a generic game that sounds like it wants to rip off Dragon age in a retro style.
Dragonslayer fits that.

^ I found them. If you are really concerned about the name of a shitty game like this then you need to get your priorities in order mate.

I also found the game to play.

http://doublesynergygames.com/dsgame.php

I don't think you'll get much support here.

P.s Are you using a program like RPG maker? Because that would give you 100x better results compared to the 2d thing you have.

Aaaaand of course you can't be bothered to actually read what I wrote.
I don't want the game to sound like that when people hear the name. I'm not worried about it actually being a crappy browser game.

I also found the game to play.

Congrats, you found the seriously outdated Pre-Alpha version. This is the "free" version- if you actually read my post you'd make the shocking discovery that this game is being developed for the PC and will be sold through Steam.

P.s Are you using a program like RPG maker? Because that would give you 100x better results compared to the 2d thing you have.

Never heard of it. We're using a program called "Gamemaker"- which, fitting the theme here, has a pretty stupid name, but involves legit coding. It was a several hundred dollar purchase and we've been using it for about 3 years now. You should check it out, they actually have a supportive, helpful community...

You've never heard of RPG maker?...

Are you for real?

Quit now. You obviously have a VERY long way to go and I'd start with the basics if you want to make an RPG.

Yeah gamemaker may have the community but you obviously aren't listening as the games on your website are seriously badly made. When you can compare your stuff to AAA games also made on gamemaker... ya'know?

Your website is out of date. "Double Synergy Games is a young online gaming website, at almost its first birthday. Here, we upload games made from scratch for you to play in your browser for free." is obviously wrong as you want to start selling games.

You guys don't have a clue yet. Don't try and promote yourself like this or complain about a name when it's obvious that your current work will go nowhere.

I may seem harsh here but my brother is programming this sort of stuff in school at the age of 15... and "Double Synergy Games" are 4 people. How can 4 "professional" people be doing worse work than a school kid?

P.s The majority of Retro RPGs you see these days are made in RPG maker. I don't personally use it but it's a powerful piece of kit.

Well it would just so happen that I am also of the age of fifteen.
And half our team barely contributes these days anyways.

Oh, and your brother is learning this in school? We are teaching this to ourselves with the little spare time we have, along with HTML, PHP and SQL for the website. And our school is pure shit. We don't learn shit. Our administration is terrible, the roof on our school threatens to crush us at any moment, and our technology is so outdated we are still using fucking chalkboards.

So no, we do not have the time or resources to self-teach ourselves to make AAA-quality games and program an entire website from scratch. We simply can't. But who are you to judge us on that? It is completely off-topic. I was looking for advice on a name.

Then be honest about that. Your post made it seem like you are PROFESSIONAL game makers who are having an argument not Teenagers. If all of us had known it was teenagers we wouldn't have bothered posting at all.
Why? Becuase if at the age of 15 you're arguing over little things like names then your group won't get far.

P.s I didn't go to school and ended up programming/designing better than you lot.. Don't blame your school system.
The only reason i quit is because it's boring as hell. I prefer composing music.

Coding games in your age seems a nice way to start your later programmer career to me. At university I ran into a couple of guys who also started their own programming companies as school kids. All of them ended up as exceptionally good programmers for whom being a software engineer is more than a job but a way of life.

Dear god, MrCherry. Why do you have to be such a pessimist? Why, instead of supporting this guy who wants to make a game, do you want to engage in a debate about something so trivial? Why do you downgrade his ideas and hopes, for absolutely no benefit to yourself. Do you want him to be successful or not, because it clearly doesn't look like it.

Quit now.

Your website is out of date.

You guys don't have a clue yet.

Why are you wasting your time doing this? Did he ask you to critique his material? No! He asked you for help, not this!

I'm sorry I lack inspiration right now, I can't think of a decent name for this for the life of me, but I do indeed think that Dragonslayer is a generic-sounding name that would easily be overlooked.

What I'm saying is that it has gone really off topic thanks to MrCherry sparking an argument. What was supposed to be a thread about finding a name for a game (I don't care how good/bad it is, or his website, and I don't understand why that should be the concerns of other people, when he didn't ask for it anyway), turned into discussions about brothers, schools, age, programming tools, and music.

Lets not be asses and come up with names. And yes, Dragonslayer is a terrible name. Don't give up though, the founders of TRF went through about two hundred names before we finally settled on one.

I wasn't "Sparking an argument"... I was giving them facts.

Now I know it's a bunch of children it all makes sense and I don't care but before hand it was made to seem like Adult Professionals so I gave out facts and truths like I would to any adult.

If they can't handle the facts then they need to do something to fix their problems as the only reason they'd get upset is if it is true.

This is why there are programming contests. ^^

I think that it the max age is "21" like for other national youth contest with prizes : 100-500$ and some publicity.

Some organizations can provide "educational services". I never used one so I know nothing.

Edit :

Apparently, youth is defined as max 25 after some searching. I must go to all youth contests before I become too old ! :>

Post amazing stuff ! I know that there are many name generators for all things.

You can call the game after the main villain (Dragon's name). Many games have that type of title.
