I can't tell if you are talking about single or multiplayer so i'll just explain both. :)
if you are referring to the single player levels then you just need to win the map before it.
if you are referring to the multiplayer level then you need to join some open games and win them. or get achievements.

Achievements are great and all but don't be a jerk and lose a game because you just had to get an Abandon achievement

the abandon achievement is won by using the abandon card and killing off atleast 50 enemies running into your wall of neutrals, not by abandoning games.

To be fair, if you only have 1 space with not much troops and you're about to die, it's not a bad time to use it...
