Disclaimer: I have never had this officially confirmed by Fizzer, probably because I've never asked him, but I think it's highly likely to be the reason why.
BackgroundIn March 2014, I uploaded a map called 'Parallel Earth'. Link:
https://www.warlight.net/Map/12432 It wasn't very good, it looks a bit messy and the bonuses aren't fully balanced. However, if you look at the map, you'll see a large island in the NW corner of the map. One of the territories on that island is called "former port of the North" (it's the most western pink territory). You might also notice that this map is version 1.1. That territory had a different name in version 1.0.
When I uploaded version 1.0 of that map, the territory in question was called "This would be called "Port of the North", but there is nowhere to go due north of Blob Island". This can be seen if you go to version 1.0 of the map:
https://www.warlight.net/Play?PreviewMap=28424Fizzer allowed this map despite the long territory name. However, 2 days after that map went public, Fizzer released this update to WarLight:
https://www.warlight.net/blog/index.php/2014/03/website-update-2-4/ If you scroll down to the 'Other Changes' section, you'll see 1 of the bullet points says "When making maps, the length of territory names, distribution names, and bonus names is now limited to 50 characters".
My TheorySo, I think that it was because I made a map with a very long territory name that there's now a limit of the number of characters for the names of territories, bonuses and distributions. I think Fizzer saw my map and decided there needed to be a rule to stop long names going all over the screen.
Other InfoThe reason that territory no longer has that long name is because some territories in version 1.0 had typos in them, so I had to make these changes. However, I didn't notice them until after the new rule had come in. Therefore, I had to shorten the name of that territory in order to correct the typos in other territories.
So, if you've ever been annoyed when you're making a map and find that the name you want to give to a territory is 51 characters long and it won't let you do that, you can blame me.
