Not VingTE when an enemy teammate leaves on Turn 1: 2015-07-14 03:34:27

I assumed it was common decency to VTE in Team games when an enemy teammate leaves before the first turn even ends. I was in a game where a enemy player didn't do this.

I didn't surrender and made him play it out, because the notion of letting someone just silently take an unfair 2v3 win "Oh well, he won't VTE so I guess I'll just surrender" really irritates me. What do you think I should've done in this situation? Should I have "just surrendered" as he said I should've?

Since it's at turn 1, you and your teammate should seek him out and hit him with everythimg you got to eliminate that player after a cheap win. Sure it'll leave you dangerously exposed, but assuming the other guy VTE'd, the game will end once he's eliminated.

I place a lot of value my time, so I just surrender. It happens too often.

Some people are just that desparate for the XP and stats I guess...

I think people should vote, but it's not enforced, and from the general consensus from these threads when they're made is it's not an etiquette requirement either.

What I tend to do is ask someone to surrender on the opposing team to balance it out (or I surrender if I'm on the larger team), this still means if the team wins the surrendering player still gets the points, it's the most fair solution in my opinion, but I only see it happen occasionally...

I guess some players get joy out of winning games while outnumbering opponents :/

Well no rule states that one must vote to end or surrender. It is everyones free will what ever the situation is. It is general decency here to do so. But this also arises a lot deliberate surrendering on first turn, when picked territories were not expected or automatic territories where poor value.

In real-time games decency is lacking value. And most of the times you play with random, unknown players. I always ask to vote to end and vote instantly if one of the players gets booted (whether in my team or opposite). If he/she surrenders without a note in chat - that makes the situation weary - as his motive is not know. Never commit orders if you understand what is the outcome - vote or no vote! Why? For example playing 3vs3. And your teammate gets booted - and not vote happens - what you do? I generally surrender, as its futile, unbalanced and waste of time! But, sometimes on automatic placement - 2vs3 win is not that rare! So I would suggest to make risky moves as this might to lead to victory + you got nothing to loose as you are the underdog! Make a few risky moves and look what the situation promises - and choose urself what you do with your time!

Another situation. When you play multi-day game and you are the host. For example 5vs5, 4vs4, etc. And someone must leave, gets booted etc. Generally I play with people i know, or have enough information that they are worth the game. If the leaver is in opposite team, then I try to balance out and do the same - whether it is AI not-AI game. In friend plays i eliminate AI and only do the surrendering trick. In riskier -games I add AI option. Why I have surrenderd voluntarily? Because the 3vs3, 4vs4, 5vs5 - some of those Templates are for 30-60 turn games. And saving a game for others to play after a month is worth-while. Second as a host I feel one is resposible of players in game and should try to make it playable!

Decency comes with trust. And I do feel comfortable playing long games with players I know. No one wants to abandon-waste a one month interesting-strategic game! And most players will not even take the risk playing 1000 territory team-game maps with random players!

@Ebin "Should I have "just surrendered" as he said I should've?"
Your choice! Just make few risky moves to get an upperhand as you are in underdog position! 2vs3 win is sweet. And you got nothing to lose! Just make bold and risky moves and look what turns out - especially in automatic distribution.

2v2v2, my teammate got booted on first round:

I surrendered the same turn. Luckily game settings demanded surrender to be accepted by other playerss, so after a while I got back to the game and decided I'll give it a chance 8]

What iritates me the most is that this asshole (my teammate) got points as well.

I'm sorry, Ebin but there are no rules or actual moral obligations to VTE if a player leaves on the first turn, no matter which team he is on. The was no message from the host prior to the start of the game claiming this was against any rules. Considering that you were using random distribution (And as such, had already gotten your starting territories by the time Lampião was booted), I think it was quite low of you to blacklist Antonio. That being said, had I been Antonio, I would have voted to end. I always like being the better and more honourable man. If I was you however, I would have suggested a vote, and surrendered if the vote had not succeeded.

I am sorry to disagree with you. Master_poof.

Ridiculous to say it is low to blacklist him. Yes, it's not a rule, but it is good manners to VTE in this situation. And if Antonio doesn't play by Ebin's standards, he is within his rights to not want to meet Antonio in a game again.

if person left after seeing picks then it's not good grounds for VTE. you should be angry at your team mate for deserting you, not at your opponent for following the rules.

I was pretty annoyed at both of them. Even if the game had been ended prematurely it would've counted as a loss for my teammate who left, since he already got booted.

"not at your opponent for following the rules"
That's obviously not the issue I took with him and I never said what he did violated the rules. Just a really cheap thing to do.

Ridiculous to have my own opinion, is it?

I could not have said it better myself. ;)
