The former Kanton Appenzell is since 1503 a Swiss Canton. Since 1597 is divided in the two Kantone (since 1999 called Halbkantone = Halfcanton) of Appenzell Innerrhoden (Catholic) and Appenzell Ausserrhoden (Protestant) as consequence of the Reformation.
