The rebels were bashed hard, and the invasion was on the verge of complete defeat when fresh reports came from the front that the Army was completely demoralized and unwilling to fight, as rumors of a possible invasion by US marines from Honduras circulated. The daring plotters, in swift action, captured Zacapa and Puerto Barrios, and called for the dictator's downfall. Shocked upon hearing the massive uprising involving some one third of the Army, the dictator kept calling the US ambassador, proclaiming it was Castro who was behind all this mess.
