Alternate fictional history

It's 1949, Newfoundland ends up voting for independence instead of joining Canada or the UK. The newly independent country is in a bad situation though as the World Wars and filthy rich British business men have taken advantage and have severely damaged the economy and quality of life over the decades in the nation. As a result the socialist/communist party of Newfoundland rose in popularity and won elections as they were for the people by the people. Although the communist government has not established relations with the USSR. The British, fearing it might, see this as a threat their businesses and because a communist nation on North American soil is unacceptable. So they send an intervention force to land at the heart of the island and quickly dismantle the communist government and army there.
