Update 3.16: Export a game to YouTube, Strategy Forum, Community Events

WarLight has just been updated to version 3.16.0! This blog post describes what’s changed.

Export a game to YouTube

WarLight can now make a video out of your games! When a multi-player game finishes, you’ll see a new “Export to YouTube” button.

Here are some samples:

Try it out today by going to past games, picking a game, clicking “Game Summary” in the upper left then “Export to YouTube.”

Strategy Forum

WarLight has a new forum for discussing all things related to WarLight strategy, both single-player and multi-player.

Just another forum? NO! This forum is fundamentally different from the other forums in that the strategy forum is moderated. Volunteers from the community have agreed to help organize this forum to try and increase it’s quality level. Moderators have the ability to hide posts or threads. This will make the thread or post hidden by default for all viewers. Hidden threads and posts can still be viewed by clicking on them, in addition to viewing the reason why it was hidden. Moderators can also change thread subject lines.

This is an experiment to see how well this kind of moderation works on WarLight.

If you’ve been avoiding the WarLight forums due to trolls, I’d like to invite you to give this new forum a chance. Post an idea for strategy you’ve been having, or ask a question about strategy.

Community Events

The Community tab now has a section titled Community Events. This lists WarLight events being run by players in the community.

This list is maintained by ps, so please contact him if you’d like something added or changed. Big thanks to ps and Muli for making this possible!

Other Changes

– If autopilot is used in the first turn of a no-luck cycle game, 30 seconds are automatically added to the player’s commit time. This is visible in the Players panel if you hover over their “first turn speed” cell.
– When creating a new mail thread, added a search box to filter the names, similar to Muli’s user script.
– The Community Levels page now shows wins and attempts.

  1. Ok, so, this update in itself is great due to a precedent it opens of small, quick fixes, related to the Userscript. Muli’s usescript as a whole adds a lot of good features, but also cause lag. The better integrated these features are, the merrier WarLight gets. The mail thread filter and the clearer youtube exports sign that WarLight is working on it’s website’s user friendlyness.

I guess the one backfire is that the moderating system – and it’s test, while at that – are quite frail. There’s no point to put a whole new subforum, since Strategy has always been integrated with general; with all these strategy threads created in the general forum, navigation disruption will still be a thing. Feels like it was made literally to be Fizzer’s guinea pig.

Cool to see WarLight now has moderation, but that’s only if the mods actually do what they must instead of just hiding what they don’t like. Still think people should actually have a clear list of moderators somewhere for a bunch of reasons; firstly to have an easier time reporting a thread since Fizzer takes a bit longer to reply, and second for transparency.

Anyhow, looking forward to the next update. Thanks, Fizzer.

  2. Good stuff, good stuff

Love how Fizzer seems to be entrusting well-known community members with more moderation power in the forums lately. We’ve been needing some of that desperately.

    1. I really hope the export to youtube feature will not be used for every small game there is, but for games that have are actually exciting to watch, with boarders shifting one way, and then another, alliances breaking and others forming etc.
No matter how exciting a game was for you playing it a straight forward march through your opponents is nothing people will want to spend their time watching. Your Joh Embrey’s… for example is basically 14 turns of expansion with one lucky guy who could expand most freely winning by the others surrendering. (OK, there might have been some skill involved winning this but you can’t tell from watching this video)
So please everybody use this feature sparsely.
This will be what people who want to learn about warlight will see, so don’t bore them but make them want to try it!

  3. Small suggestion: If a video upload fails, it might be efficient to save the rendered result for a bit on the server to prevent having to do it again should the person wish to retry due to not having linked in properly with their Youtube account to avoid repeat processing of the same task.

  4. I have a suggestion: the community levels tab need to add a filter/sorter to find what’s the hardest level, most plays etc.
