The Axis Alliance grew to control large portions of Europe during World War II, and the Balkan Campaign played a large role in that. One position that the Axis needed to hold was the Mediterranean Sea. Germany occupied France and gained that coastline, Mussolini obviously controlled the Italian coasts, but Greece was an issue. The Axis powers looked to resolve that in the Balkan Campaign, which was the Italian and German invasion of Greece and the Balkan states. It was a move that would give the Axis control over most of Europe's Mediterranean, as well as bring them closer to Soviet Union. It was an important step in the Axis plan to dominate the world. |
