1998, in the midst of the Yugoslav wars, nationalist ideas that have come out of the wars of independence in Yugoslavia have spread to the Hungarian majority region in Northern-Serbia, Vojvodina. Vojvodinian nationalist parties in Vojvodina start gaining popularity in the region but the Serbian government shuts down these parties and installs a pro Serbian regional government. As a result, Nationalist groups band together to form the VLA (Vojvodinian Liberation Army), designated a terrorist group by Serbia, to fight a war of independence to gain independence from Serbia. However, the Serbians manage to crush a majority of the army at a battle near the capital of the region, Novisad. Throwing the group's remaining forces into chaos. With their backs against the wall, they call for aid from Hungary, the Hungarian government agrees and orders the Hungarian military to launch an operation to invade Northern-Serbia to aid the VLA and to force Belgrade to recognize the independence of Vojvodina.
