In a single-elimination tournament, any player or team that loses is eliminated from the tournament. The tournament continues until all players or teams are eliminated except one - the winner.

Single-elimination tournaments may specify for each game to contain more than two teams or players. For example, in a three-person game, two players are eliminated from the tournament in each game and only one proceeds to the next round.
