I just wanted to give a shout-out to all you soldiers who helped (and are helping) fight for the United States of America's freedom! Veteran's Day affects me a lot because I have many relatives who fought for my country. My great grandpa (who passed away of lung cancer ovver a decade ago) was in Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, when the Japanese bombed us. He even had a grenade go off on him.
Remember to take a moment to think of the great things our veterans have done for us. Even if your country does not celebrate Veteran's Day, still take a moment to think of what yor country's veterans or heroes have done for your country.

That's no reason not to honour the veterans, though. It's the politicians that decided to destroy those countries.
Here in the Netherlands, there are always some Indonesians protesting when the Dutch veterans are honoured, because, granted, we were definitely in the wrong there, but that's not the soldiers' fault.
I'm not sure, but I believe that the Germans also honour the lives lost fighting for Nazi Germany...

I am a proud American and I am thankful for the veterans who have fought for my freedom. But the US Military lost its way a long time ago. We need to stop being the worlds policeman and stop trying to remake the Middle East in our own image by "Shock and Awe" and anonymous drones.

+1 for Mercenary.
Pity that our countries are, through weapon plants, dependent of war. It is vital for our well-being and, thus, order.
As George Orwell made Emmanuel Goldstein put it: *"War is Peace"*.

If Guatemala had developed into a vast world spanning empire, it too would be throwing its weight around to the detriment of vassal states and puppet nations, as has every empire in the history of man. Until there's a strong world government to keep things on an even keel, there will always be winners and losers in the game of power. Eventually the USA's star will fade and if we're still around as a species, some other power will grow and lord it over everyone with an iron fist. Funny, in fact, if you look into the history of how many of the nations named as victims of the US were created, why hey! That was the empire of Spain, and they treated their colonies FAR worse than the US has ever treated any nation other than maybe the bikini atolls.
As for Iran, they had thousands of years on center stage through multiple dynastic empires, and though the Persian empire was remarkably enlightened at several points, all in all they unleashed a river of blood and death through central asia. Hell even Afghanistan had its time on top of the stack during the days of Tamur the Lame.
The point is that the members of the US military have, by and large, shown much more discretion in their operations than the armies of many nations that came before, because the military is in a fishbowl and the by and large educated and well-meaning citizens lash out when truly bad atrocities (that used to be just part and parcel of armies on the march, such as rape, plunder, salting of the earth, poising of the wells, etc) come to light. Booyeah to them, sorry to those who get burned by the periodically misguided policies of the current most powerful nation on earth, and happy veteran's day :)
