American social media/mainstream news bias against conservatives. Does it exist, or is it mass paranoia on the part of conservatives? Discuss.

Note that this is not a debate over whether liberal or conservative values are right; this is merely a debate about whether or not mainstream news outlets and social media are biased against conservatives.

Also note that I mean American news, as I'm not too familiar with the news outlets in other countries.

It's a world-wide meme that everyone thinks the media is biased against them.

It's not like liberals in the US haven't complained about conservative media bias in the past, no?

^^Define "conservative" please. The main issue with the traditional left-right distinction is that they are not very clear.

Of course they are biased against conservatives. We can throw Facebook, Google, and youtube in there as well.

The US mainstream media isn't liberal; it's authoritarian and marxist. The actual liberals wanted decentralized government, right to private property, and freedom from the old feudal social order.

I think a better question is whether A, Do major news sources in US have a bias? If yes, in what direction is that bias?

You put social media and mainstream news kinda as the same thing up there? Why, to me they are two superdiffrent things, as I never check social media for news myself.

In order to answer the question, we first have to go with major news sources. For example, Washington Post, CNN and Fox News as they are well know.

Fox News has for as long as I can remember, been considered as an untrustworthy news sources that is frequently accused of performing inaccurate reporting and presenting a certain viewpoint that seems to align with a conservative viewpoint. That being said, they have actually criticized Trump several times. In the places I grew up in, Fox News have always been considered as a good example of biased reporting. It's know as a conservative news outlet, no doubt.

WP. Well, after the election they changed their tagline to Democracy Dies in Darkness. Quite openly anti-trump. That being said, in general they report fair and factual on what events have occurred. I don't think they report biased news. That being said, it's located around DC, hence it's local readers are likely to be Democrats. Possible some slight inherent bias, however you can trust that they report and write in a factual manner.

CNN. Well, they used to be good I think. Now I think they have been accused several times for inaccurate reporting. CNN has taken a turn for a more sensational headlines outlet and quite frankly, on controversial issues they are likely pushing one viewpoint. I would try to avoid citing them, so yeah. Kinda heading towards the Fox News box, but the opposite end.

I am not sure about where this mass paranoia comes from tbh. But then again, I don't live in a conservative place and well, no-one around here saw Trump happening.

In general Social Media algorithms tend to create 'bubbles' where your own opinions gets reflected by what the algorithms shows you. Hence they enforce your own beliefs. Thus, yes they are biased towards whatever you want to think.

You know, if you are not satisfied with your country's news, you can always, like you know, get your news from foreign sources.

^Not a bad approach. Assuming you have access to foreign sources. Take Palestinian/Israel news. Always biased reporting there, with international reports often being based on local sources.

Yeah. Genius. Because I only want to hear what other countries have to say about American politics.

I see you are not familiar with the concept of getting your news from multiple sources.

Why am I not surprised?

No, I entirely am. But foreign does not equal multiple. I can get news from multiple sources without having to be lectured about our politics by foreigners. I mean, would you want to read about Austrian news from an American source?

I haven't read Austrian news about US, but infrequently read German as well as Norwegian papers on what US is doing. In many cases I find them more informative then their US counterparts. Not only the great comedic value of having experts trying to explain how Trump won, but also trying to explain his tweets :D (But for real, international media is always worth a read. Take for example Europeans reaction to the trade tax. Or their perspective on US daily? shooting news. Pretty good coverage on Police brutality and US poverty as well.)

Sure don't read them for news on whether that local bridge needs upgrading, but US has a lot of.....issues... that european media loves to cover in debt. Oh and this too. Yeah, the picture explains why quite well.

I actually prefer foreign news over domestic ones, when it comes to Austrian politics. Not only are the much less biased (in the case of Austria there is probably no bias at all, since barely any US-American could even find Austria on a map, even if it was a map of Austria), but they also stick to the truly relevant topics. For example if some politican has a typo in some tweet, domestic news would lose their mind, but foreign ones dont care at all (see Trump, and covfefe). Thats not the kind of reporting I want.
