Update for Week 3 - July 29th to August 5th

Woo, we set a new record this week : 3 games! The vacations have seemed to end for now, so the race is on for that early advantage. To be fair, going this slow, does give me the chance to make better updates, so I'll take it for now.
By the way if this update looks rushed, it's because I'm hungry. Think I'll go for a ham sandwich. I promise I'll try harder next time (no I won't)



psykkoman defeats HunterDW

-Picks


psykkoman picks are a bit strange, but the pattern is clear. His #1 pick is in the central bonus of the map. This area is very likely to be contended for, so overall it's a good coverage pick. His 2 is a good income spot and is often a top pick on BIV, so if he was to lose it, he could easily perform a blind counter on it. His 3-6 are all in +3 bonuses for quick income. Assuming he doesn't lose 2/4/5, he has good coverage across the board no issue. If he does end up losing those picks though, there is no sweat as it would be very easy to predict your opponent with this intel.



Hunter triple pick the blue 4 in the north. If he loses 1, then it's a quick loss. Coverage is poor and requires you to meet your opponent late game.

-Gameplay

First 3 turns are pretty dull, so I will skip them.
While Hunter is able to get the jump by countering Impora on turn 4, he overexpands when he's in a halfway decent position, if he stacks to Mifar and blockades Calia (while not expanding into Nicha), he would have a good shot at taking a bulk of psykk's income. psykk on the other hand makes an errant prediction that Hunter will be in Chalanka, luckily for him with no threat in the area, he can now use it to help him take Liconia. If Hunter doesn't swiftly overrun psykk, this game is over.
On turn 5 Hunter gives up a key double border and puts the minimal amount of armies into countering Mecolia. psyk takes advantage of this and at this point the game is over. Calia is taken on turn 6 and Hunter can't stop him from wrecking his income.



Kayn defeats Herul

-Picks



Hergul focuses on some of the smaller bonuses (outside of his #2 which is used to help take Caria). Overall his picks are decent, if not relying on having too much presence in the east. As long as he doesn't lose a pick in the east he should be able to get fast income to deal with any early brawls. But the picks are still very risky and leaves a bit of coverage on the table.



Kayn seemed to have divided the board into two zones. He focuses his early picks around Thermum-Aetolia, which offers both early and late game income. He also sticks his 4 brilliantly in one of the most contentions spots of the east. He puts his 5/6 towards the middle and focuses the rest of his picks in the east.

-Gameplay

Herul is in a precarious spot. All of his income is threatened early. His turn 1 goes as well as you could hope, but he gets pretty greedy by not using Western Mysia to prevent Kayn from getting into prime position on Phocaea-Cyme. The greed continues as he overextends himself while also trying yo take mylyio in Kayn's face (which kayn triple borders). This goes about as well as you'd expect.
Turn 3 is a good one positionally for Hergul as he blast towards Kayn's income. Kayn does complete Epirus though, giving him a clear income advantage. While he continues to cause major issues for Hergul in the east.
Turn 4 Kayn gives up West Central Greece, but still gains +5 from the east. Turn 5 is a good chance for Hergul to get back into it, but he doesn't take the undefended Epirus from Kayn, keeping it at a 14-8 rather than 9-8 game. By this turn, Kayn is already about to take Dodecanese, and get a huge income advantage, and there's nothing Hergul can do to stop him.

Dutch Desire beats sloppyfatginger

-Picks



sloppy banks on getting his #1 pick to cover a decent area, while hoping his 2/3 can offer both great early and late game income. His 4 is a quick easy bonus to snatch. Oddly enough, sloppy ignores Sporades which is a devastating counter to both his 2/3 and 5/6. His late picks are also "sloppy" for lack of a better word. I'm not sure what his plan was behind them.



Dutch's picks get him great income early, assuming he doesn't lose his first pick to sloppy (which he doesn't). He also picks his 6 in sporadesafter his 5 in Ionia. This is important as those are the most dominant picks in the area.

-Gameplay

Both players basically have no intel, with that sloppy ends up countering two area that don't need to be. Even more peculiar is his counter in South Cyclades. In contrast, Dutch completes two bonuses to get an early +3 advantage to sloppy's +2 bonus. Both players did set themselves up to complete a 4 bonus next turn. On turn 3, sloppy heads towards getting a +5 bonus, but fails to stop Dutch from picking up Caria, which he subsequently fails to break the next turn. By the end of turn 4, Dutch leads 19-16, and has more armies/delays than sloppy does.
On turn 5 sloppy fails the tradeoff of breaking a bonus for position and surrenders.




Overview

{101st} is still on top, gaining another win this week, to get to 8 points. CORP is the big winner this week as they jump to second place with 2 wins. It's hard to know if they'll keep up until team results start coming in, but every win is important. The Wizards are in third place, but go 0-1 this week. VIW starts 1-2 going 0-1 this week. Apprentice finally finishes a game. Unfortunately for them it's a loss in a potential key game. But 0-1 is really not much to fret about. New World Order fails to complete a game again. Tbf, you can't lose if you never finish a game.

Update for Week 4 - August 6th to August 12th - Part 1

Busy week as several games finish. At this rate we may finish sooner than ex... Nevermind, Min is on vacation again. With that being said the picture is getting clearer now, it will be interesting to see if any comebacks will be made (Looking at you, VIW).
I will be giving a less thorough run down of games due to the quantity, sorry if you prefer the longer reviews :P
Also thank you AG for the lovely update, unfortunately his love of VIW has seemingly blinded his face from reality.
To bring him back to reality, let's all give him a good stabbing.

To say this wasn't close would be an understatement. But I think that has more to do with picks. Northern Great Plains turned out to be a liability for them (especially the way they picked it). The counter by Nwo to use the Southern Great Plains with a stack (after gifting to the most income heavy player), certainly worked out.
VIW also showed little interest in picking some of the more income heavy bonuses, like almost completely ignoring California.
Ultimately the final nail in the coffin was Ninja being 2v1ed early in the north, while also missing two key predictions.

Fairly good picks by both sides, so there is not much to comment, outside that 101st seemed to favor picking the +4s a tad bit more importance than CORP, which probably gave them an edge. For instance, all three 101st players pick California at #3, while CORP had it #6, #7, and unpicked. Small things like that can make a huge difference, and it shows here.
The thing that really hurt CORP here though was they had a 3v1 in the southern half (which that one pick they had was in a very contentious spot). CORP got off to a good start, but with the superior expansion possibilities 101st had, all that 101st had to do was play it safe.



Ragnar Lothbrok and psykkoman defeated {{NeRo}} and sloppyfatginger

I'm not much of a final earth expert, and the fact is it is never easy to say one set of picks is better than the other. There are certain things about each picks I like better than the other. One thing for sure though, Apps avoidance of Middle East and Greenland for Brazil, while CORP's betting on them picking it early, definitely hurt them. Sloppy was actually pretty lucky it was Ragnar that ended up with the Argentina pick, as psykkoman was in a much better spot to steamroll him if it was him. It is pretty clear though if they didn't blind counter ME, this game would favor CORP in a long drawn out game.
That being said it plays out fairly well for Apps early, until psykkoman after a gift flanks sloppy in Brazil. After that it's him using his income to overpower them, while Ragnar refuses to stop bothering Nero.



LeQuébécois_Benoit and Arcturus defeats Baer and Ragnar Lothbrok

CORP takes a bit of a risk by picking different #1 and #2 picks, and it doesn't pay off (Since Baer had last pick), allowing for NWO to get the ftb. CORP also makes some interesting picks around the Alena bonus. NWO plays it a little safer and doesn't overpick in center. The one pick I think that made the most difference is Oaihi though.
While CORP is able to get an early lead, it falls away quickly as Benoit and Arcturus double up on Likeke. By turn 7 NWO has a stack avantage, but more importantly has much better expansion.

This is pretty simple. The game was lost at picks for VIW. While I can somewhat see VIW's gameplan, it was still easy to counter, and the early income advantage was lost within a turn

I won't really go into much detail about this game, all that is needed to know is Hunter triple picks a rather bad triple, with jimmy getting a pick in the area. All jimmy had to do is not lose position and he would win the game.



Hergul defeats machine-washed-bliss

Both players pick fairly similarly, and rely on their 1st picks as the center of their gameplan. The major difference is bliss pick his 2/3 around Caria and Hergul around Macedonia. Although Bliss doesn't get his first pick, he does have a good start as far as early income is concerned, but he makes a mistake, and goes after Evia instead of Thebean League, costing him an 11-9 potential advantage, with a 9-9 tie instead. He then overcommits in Sporades and sets up a perfect scenario for Hergul to get the upset. Using an early stack advantage, Hergul expands and overwhelms bliss.

Kayn defeats sloppyfatginger

Interesting picks by Kayn, as he quad picks around Sparta, blocking sloppy's attempted late counters of the area. Sloppy's 1/2 are definitely odd, especially since they'd lose to a sporades combo, luckily for him he has the area mostly secure. But unlucky for him, that's what makes the big difference in the game, as Kayn gets a strategically placed pick, where he can pressure all of sloppy's income. Sloppy plays it fairly well, until Kayn gets ahold of Chalcedice, a major chokepoint of sloppy's income. It doesn't take long for Kayn to shred into sloppy's income and win the game.



Uki defeats Star of the East
CORP vs. New World Order

Star places his bets on a triple, but loses his first pick, luckily for him Uki has no intel. I really have no way to explain this other than that it was a back and forth expansion fest, until turn 9 when Uki countered Antarctica with a stack. Star went for the tradeoff with South Africa, but didn't get it, and lost two bonuses as a result.

Uki defeats Boiled Dove
CORP vs. The Wizards.

Boiled dove went for all 3 bonuses, but unfortunately for him he also stole Uki's #3 pick. Uki is able to get an income lead and doesn't relinquish it. The game is over pretty quickly, just due to the value of intel.

Update for Week 4 - August 6th to August 12th - Part 2

Overview

{101st} surges to a 5-1 start and picks up 11 more points this week. They remain a clear favorite, but it's still too early to know for sure. New World Order is also off to a good start, going 3-1 this week (13 points). That being said two of these wins came by their heavy hitter Benoit. NWO's fate will likely lie with the performance of how their 1v1 and 3v3 players perform. CORP has a decent week going 3-2 (7 points). They did lose both of those games to heavy favorites, so there is no shame there. They also pick up a key win vs. Apprentice on Final Earth, who is likely to be their biggest challenger for a top 3 spot. The Wizards goes 1-1 this week. The good news is they beat VIW on another game, so they increasingly look like they won't be in last place as expected. The bad news is if they actually plan to promote, losing to CORP is a bad start to getting there. Very Important Weirdos have a bad week going 0-4, they'll have to have a strong rebound if they plan on not being last. Apprentice has yet to win a game, going 0-3 so far. Luckily for them it is way to early to write them out of the race, but they will have to fight extra hard if they want a promotion spot.
