Look up the definition of donuts in the dictionary and you'll have your answer.

The forum is titled "Off Topic".
I think that speaks for itself.

Yes but I still don't understand the purpose of making a thread on a gaming website about something you could just find out by googling...

The essence of the doughnut is the hole. The dough is merely there for emphasis.

Since I'm so generous I sometimes take the excess dough and offer people the essence of the doughnut. I'm just that selfless :)

No.

Names for dishes are constantly reappropriated by restaurants trying to communicate things about themselves to customers. Eg Jus: originally french meaning juice, came to mean the juice from a cooked piece of meat. Nowadays when someone says Jus on a menu they arent just serving pan juices, its almost always red wine sauce (red wine reduction and demi-glace) but red wine sauce doesnt sound as sexy. it sounds old fashioned. actually its less old fashioned than jus. Customers and chefs and most important the people who write menus (not chefs) dont know a whole lot about food and arent interested in nomeclature.

So you can basically call anything a donut (or doughnut?) at this point and noone will say shit.

Thank goodness that doughnuts have holes in them otherwise everyone would get fat a lot faster.

No, they do not need a hole. Jam doughnuts do not have a hole.

I wonder why the Americans spell doughnuts as "Donuts".

I don't know, considering they're made out of dough, it should be spelt doughnuts.

Also, despite the fact they spell it donuts, which is a spelling that clearly should be pronounced "do-nuts", they pronounce it "dough-nuts".
