It is literally the worst place to punch, because it will do nothing, only damage your hand. Choking, holding, lifting, throwing is better. If you're fighting for your life, you can grab its back legs and pull them apart until they break. But it's pretty extreme.

When my dog is fighting with another dog, I usually just lift one of the dogs up and the other dog can't reach it. Most people are afraid to intervene in dogfights tho.)
