New ones or just in general? If you are not talking new ones, that is a HUGE pool to list off from.

I really like the Bourne series (I have read all but the newest book).

The Oceans series (Oceans 11, 12, 13) is pretty good.

Matrix Trilogy is good too.

The newer James Bond movies are good.

Lord of the Rings trilogy (if you are into that stuff).

man, hard to dig back and remember good movies from a while ago though...

Grand Turino was good. Hangover (only first one) and Anchorman are great (not action though). Moneyball was pretty good if you are into sports. Inception was good (you have to really pay attention to get all the meaning though). Gangs of New York, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Pulp Fiction, a Few Good Men are all worth watching.

Action, probably Taken is a good movie. It doesn't feel as fake as other contemporary actions movies. Note I said Taken, not Taken 2.
War I don't have many suggestions.
Crime, Monachium, Chinatown, Godfather 1 or 2. Too many to choose from.
Mystery? Does Fight Club count?
From horror I recommend The Conjuring, unless by horror you mean slasher flicks, then you won't like this one.
Adventure? As vague description as it gets, watch Back to The Future trilogy.

Oh yeah, Fight Club, forgot about that, gotta see that. I didn't list Godfather because they are pre-1990 (last one might be after 1990). Another crime type one is Unusual Suspects. Lots of people really like it, I think its OK. Also, Reservoir Dogs is another good one. Another action one I liked was Negotiator.

Thanks guys. I've seen all of Tarentinos films, Taken (yeah Taken 2 was disappointing), James Bond, Matrix, Inception (loved that), and a few of the other ones too; I'll check out the others now though. When I say mystery, I mean something like Inception or Da Vinci Code, something more than raw action. Not mystery really at all :D Psychological? Thought provoking? You get the idea.

I said post-1990 because too many action films are disappointing without the cool effects. I have enjoyed a good few older movies too - been intending to watch Godfather for a while.

Its usual suspects and 12 years a slave. Both are good.

I would say its a big shame to restrict yourself to 1990 onwards by the way.

Yeah..I just find that (especially with action) films are more enjoyable post 1990 or so with the better effects. I do watch older films with good plots though.

Thanks for the good-looking suggestions above too!

A few good ones already mentioned. I'll throw a few more in the pot, hopefuly without repeat. Many are pre 90s. I get it though. I remember having a hard time getting into anything pre 80s once. I assume I am talking to someone younger than me.

I just got a bit obsessed with that list!

Action: Terminator 2, Aliens, The Raid, Speed, Point Break, Top Gun, RoboCop.

War: Platoon, Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Schindlers List.

Crime: city of god, heat, goodfellas, scarface, mystic river, dog day afternoon, carlitos way, the fugitive, clockwork orange, in brugges, fargo, Jackie brown, zodiac,

Adventure (a tricky classification): Indiana Jones except the newest one, toy story, Jurassic park. Son of Rambo.

Mystery: Prisoners, the game, shutter island, Donnie Darko, infernal affairs, moon, 12 monkeys,

Horror: Jaws, Alien, Let the right one in, Old Boy, Cabin in the Woods, seven, the mist, the excorcist, the shining, silence of the lambs, Sean of the dead,

+1 on Braveheart (my favorite movie, didn't know if it should be put on here as it is half drama/half action), terminator, top gun (again half drama but a classic), Full metal jacket (forgot about that one).

Casino is older but a good crime movie none the less.

"My Way" is my favorite movie. It's South Korean... I don't really like foreign movies, but this movie had me engaged the entire time and attached to the characters, I know it sounds "cheesy" but it's true. It's a World War 2 based movie with ALOT of action, trust me when I say it's not boring.
