yeah, in noob's game the wastelands are set up so the only problem he would have is from indonesia. and even though your opponent gets thailand, your having west china is so improbable that he doesn't bother checking. your opponent doesn't play great in thailand, but it's still decent.
also, the only real chance of not getting your top 3 is if he chooses india as his 1, which isn't too likely.

It's fun against bad players but, as you can see, if he was any good I would have lost.

Triple picking is usually cheesy. Period. But you can hope your opponent considers your plan is to counter and let you pick part of the triplet and not get the whole package because it would be considered weak to set them as picks 1 2 3.
So it's high risk, high reward and should be considered if you really have clues on your opponent's way of picking. Sometimes bad players will surprise strong ones this way, and could figure it as a desperate option because they know they still don't match the opponent.
Szeweningen, I don't concur : it applies to Africa, because it's a unity you have to break and it shouldn't be allowed to an opponent in a wasteland-free Africa. It's a fast and safe chestnut if you have free hands in it. So, sure, a favorable distribution makes Africa a dreamland in case you triple-pick and build up an unbreakable core there, but still, do you really hope any rugged player will let you complete it ?.. :o)

This game was fun, but then again, if the person I was playing was any good, it probably would not have worked....
Wait, but he's the best player on Warlight, so that must mean that he's good, right?
I'm so confused. :(

He did some really dumb stuff, like making the same exact moves over and over again while you were completing Southeast Asia without confrontation. He could have broken Europe had he committed to attacking one spot or the other. Instead he backed away from your only bonus in order to...I'm not sure what. Attack it from an angle that you could actually defend it from?
I have to assume that he didn't think you actually triple picked, and was worried about falling behind on income elsewhere. In reality, breaking Europe from Georgia or Turkey would have been game over, even if you had managed to keep him from completing South America. All he had to do was maintain some presense there while breaking your only bonus.
I quite thoroughly enjoyed watching that game either way.

@John : turn 2, command an attack-only move to France, so that you have 80% luck your 2 mobile troops in Spain actually stay up front.

@Mian - Thanks! You're right about the attack only, wish I rememberd that at the time.
@Duke, I have no clue why he didn't pressure Europe either, but that was my biggest fear.

Tried triple picking knowing there was a really good chance he would go for the same countries. Turned into a counterpick and I knew where he was by turn 3 and had access to everything, and kept expanding with my one safe pick. Easy game.

John,
You got really lucky on turns 10, 11, 12 and 13 as well as a couple of others. If you fail to hold your countries (which you held due purely to luck) you would lose.
Not much can be learned from this game. Anybody can win with any picks if they get ridiculously lucky for 4 critical turns in a row.

Billy, how does one "get lucky" by doing the same turn over and over again when the math works in their favor? You abandoned Southeast Asia to him, so he was going to have similar income to you regardless. You had given up the two positions where you could really threaten to take his bonus, and instead concentrated on the place where he could defend from a single territory.
The worst thing you did, and not luck or his playing, was failing to attack Algeria on turn 10. He had four troops there, but instead of putting everything down to get next to Europe, you screwed around with spreading out some defenses for no good reason. Defending Pakistan would have been as good a turn as that. You clearly were under the impression that he was going to reinforce to ensure he could break Pakistan, but instead of taking advantage, you screwed around and wasted your chance. Then he just put everything into defense each turn because you couldn't stop him from doing that.
Also, why would you bother putting troops into Lybia each turn instead of putting them in your main stack? If he was going to attack Lybia, then that would work in your favor, since it would open up Algeria to do so, and you could attack Europe. Instead, you wasted those troops turn after turn in attacking Algeria in such a way as to give him just enough advantage. You seem to be calling it "luck" that you put troops in bad positions and couldn't break Algeria, but that seems more a lack of skill on your part.

As for actual luck as measured by the game, you guys were even for the early turns, but you gained a huge amount of luck in the later turns (you know, the ones you were complaining about him being lucky in?). It's actually you who were lucky there.
