Windows 10 will stop getting updates (even security ones) on 14 October 2025

There are relatively high hardware requirements to use Windows 11, notably CPU and secure boot. There is a workaround to bypass them on
https://www.howtogeek.com/793389/why-is-windows-11-saying-system-requirements-not-met/. I wouldn't be in favour of using the workarounds because Windows could just force the requirements on you using other methods and possibly make your device unusable.
There are certain 'features' of Windows 11 that you should be aware of:
- Bitlocker automatically enabled - prevents you from logging in if you didn't take note of the decryption key. Requires full reinstall to use again. You will loose all your files by doing that.
- Collects your data (Telemetry) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2TyrLZT0r0
- Recall / Copilot AI records your screen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9DnwB02hJw
- Ads on Start menu
- Forced OS updates without your consent (just like in Windows 10)
I would strongly recommend
exploring
alternative operating systems to ensure your device is kept secure and free from malware.
The most user-friendly flavours of Linux are
Ubuntu,
Pop!_OS,
Linux Mint among others -

You can run Linux from a USB if you want to try them out.
To run Steam Windows games on Linux:
- Install Steam
- Login to it
- In the top-left, click Steam > Settings > Compatibility
- Enable Steam Play for supported titles
- Enable Steam Play for all other titles
- Run other titles with [Proton Experimental]
Right-click a game in your Liberary > Properties > Compatibility
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool
- Select Proton Experimental
If you tried the above steps and that still didn't work, check https://www.protondb.com/. Proton is developed by Valve and it's one of programs that Steam Deck uses to run Windows games.
Installing Linux operating system updates does not require a restart (unlike Windows) and you can download and install updates whenever you like.
