Well, it wasnt really a surpise, the more informed already knew that for long, but nethertheless Princeton University decided to examine it closely and scientifically. The result should come as a shock to everyone still waving that jingoistic flag of Murican democracy.

In the study, “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups and Average Citizens,” researchers compared 1,800 different U.S. policies that were put in place by politicians between 1981 and 2002 to the type of policies preferred by the average and wealthy American, or special interest groups.

Researchers then concluded that U.S. policies are formed more by special interest groups than by politicians properly representing the will of the general people, including the lower-income class.

This is what they found:

Multivariate analysis indicates that economic elites and organised groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while average citizens and mass-based interest groups have little or no independent influence.

So they say:

When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organised interests, they generally lose. Moreover, because of the strong status quo bias built into the US political system, even when fairly large majorities of Americans favour policy change, they generally do not get it.

They conclude:

Americans do enjoy many features central to democratic governance, such as regular elections, freedom of speech and association and a widespread (if still contested) franchise. But we believe that if policymaking is dominated by powerful business organisations and a small number of affluent Americans, then America's claims to being a democratic society are seriously threatened.

Ironically, the government did such a good job of scaring the American's when it comes to socialism and communism (they're not the same, though most American's can't tell you the difference), that they, in their pursuit of securing their freedoms, sold it for an established oligarchy and elected monarchy.

Or perhaps it's those that blindly hate a single country rather than dealing with a world-wide problem that are the true puppets.

Doesn't surprise me at all. Beyond the issue of the masses not getting their way, there is the issue that people don't even vote their own best interests to start with. Take my dad. He votes for a particular party even though if I were to poll him on certain issues, %90 of the time the party he votes for does the opposite of that. So you have a country that is mostly ignorant to what is going on, and a bunch of leaders that know it and take advantage of that.

it's not exclusive to the USA. plenty of supposedly democracatic governments in europe are run by corrupt politicians serving their private interests.
