I’d add jache to the list of people who have a legitimate chance of being next.

Either Tornado or Mori next probably. But if I were a betting person, I wouldn't bet on anyone else getting it this year. So I don't think current rating or recent records really matter much in consideration.

Small steps Beren, everyone else's best rating are a lot higher than his. Jache is great and his play is impressive especially on the recent seasonal win but everyone else on the list reached 1990+. Once he reaches a higher best rating he will 100% be higher on the list but I favor guys that have reached there first. Also its not like I do not have him on the list...

Edit: Yeah Mori is great once his rating gets back he will be a favorite too!

Octane won the trophy with a rating of 2148. Of course his peak is much higher. But given this, I'd say you need to be capable of hitting 2150 on a reasonably stacked ladder to win the trophy. Also you have to be fortunate enough or persistent enough to get it done in the right conditions (your closest adversary no higher than around 2100 with you at least 20-25 points ahead when you hit first and need 10 games to hold). Only active players currently capable of doing that that haven't done so already are Tornado and Mori.

Yea definitely need to be able to hit around 2100-2150 for the trophy. Tornado is 100% the most favored to be the next to win it and Mori should be 2nd once he hits back to a decent rating. But after that it’s definitely Juan and Xeno if they go on a hot streak and start winning a lot. After all they are both seasonal winners and are pretty proven as well which is what my list shows. Other players besides that are more so unlikely in my opinion so chances are lower for them.

Welcome to this week's weekly update, in a week that turned out very eventfully. We've had multiple things we considered talking about, but in the end one event stood out far ahead of the others.

Congratulations to Octane for being the newest trophy holder for the MTL!

At the start of the week, the main story going around was MoriOri's impressive 16 game winstreak. Admittedly, returning from a non-join streak tends to result in ideal circumstances for a large winstreak, but there were some impressive wins in there along the way.
Another interesting story has been the Harmony recruitment push, resulting in 7 Harmony players currently on the ladder. The players mostly joined last week, but the fact they're still here now shows that the push has some staying power. Very nice to see, and a shout out to Denna for orchestrating it.

The main story of the week, however, is obviously our new trophy holder. Octane has tried to grab the trophy on many occasions at this point and has gotten close a few times, but the relentless speed and ability of Rufus makes a succesful 10 game string on top difficult to achieve. This attempt was initiated with a round robin from last week's top 3, where Octane picked up wins against both Rufus and tornado back to back on Tuesday. Octane kept a cool head and maintained two games at a time for then though, as the rating gap to Rufus was still small. The belief in the attempt came when Xenophon picked up a win against Rufus Wednesday, creating a 25 point gap. Octane upped to 9 games after this. 4 quick wins Thursday put Octane in a great spot, especially as Juan beat Rufus. Disaster struck Friday, as jache beat Octane, and with 4 games to go, the rating gap between Rufus and Octane dipped to 3 points. A win against Jacoþ thε Restle§°ⁿ³ created some space again, and Saturday saw a mad dash to get the final few wins in, as Rufus picked up a win against master of desaster at the same time Octane beat Beelzebub. An hour later, however, Octane finally clinched the trophy by beating master of desaster himself, and as the bi-hourly update came through, Beren made it official.

The current list of trophy holders is:
Rufus, Buns157, Deadman, master of desaster, Beep Beep I'm a Jeep, Timinator • apex, No.One, Malakkan, Pardon, FiveStarGeneral and Octane.

The Top 10:
Rank	Player Rating	W/L	Rank Change
1	Octane 2159	12/1	1
2	Rufus 2133	12/4	-1
3	Buns157 1994	1/2	1
4	tornado 1979	0/3	-1
5	Juan 1947	11/4	5
6	Jacoþ thε Restle§°ⁿ³	1941	2/1	1
7	FiveStarGeneral 1935	1/1	1
8	Forsaken 1935	4/2	1
9	Beren Erchamion 1932	0/4	-4
10	Xenophon 1924	12/2	NEW
(NEW implies the player wasn't ranked a week ago, whatever the reason for that may be)

Stats of the Week:
Most Active: Rufus, with 16 games (12 wins, 4 losses)
Most Wins: Octane, Rufus and Xenophon, 12 wins each
Biggest Rank Rise: We Ride, rose 8 ranks
Biggest Rank Tumble: Botanator and Sixpointer, dropped 6 ranks
Biggest Rating Rise: Octane, gained 85 points
Biggest Rating Drop: Sixpointer, lost 85 points
Longest Ongoing Winstreak: Ralph, 6 wins in a row

Player of the Week:
Octane

While we initially planned on a different player of the week, Octane's accomplishments this week deserve some extra attention. Octane has previously picked up the 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 ladder trophies. Additionally he won season XLVI on the Belarus template and has multiple top 5 seasonal finishes. He's also one of the recent top performers on the AWP World Tour.

Favorite template: Lampuria Swap
Favorite player: MoriOri
Peak rating: 2238
Peak rank: 1

(Interviewer: Ralph)
Thank you for joining us for the player of the week interview Octane, and congratulations on the trophy!

Thanks for having me!

You have been close multiple times, and now you finally did it. Are you relieved, proud and happy, or has this achievement left your future without goals? Since you have now achieved the hardest feat known to mankind.

I'd say you've already perfectly described how I feel. I already knew I was always capable of getting it, as there were multiple times that I had gotten really close, and just needed a few more games to go my way to end up successful. It's all just a matter of execution, racing against Rufus, who basically knows this game like the back of his hand, while also being the fastest player, is no easy task. One thing that you didn't mention though is the bragging rights, now I can finally go around with confidence saying that I'm better than Mori and Tornado, because I have the MTL trophy and they don't. It's a wonderful feeling really.

Bragging rights are important! It has been looking like a two horse race between you and tornado for the trophy, and this week we finally had its conclusion. Do you have any words of encouragement for tornado, now that you have left him behind?

Just keep hacking away at it, all it takes is one really good winning streak to take the shiny golden trophy. Just don't let Rufus get into your head, he can smell his opponent's fear through the computer screen, and he's not the type to show mercy. Don't forget that you'd be letting down your #1 superfan Texx as well, if you ever find yourself losing motivation, just remember he is always rooting for you.

Speaking of texx, and other promising players, who do you think will be the next couple of players to challenge for the trophy?

Outside of Tornado and Mori, who are obvious candidates to be the next MTL trophy winner, I'd say there's a few. Xeno, Juan, jache, PS, Beren, Motoki, alexclusive, Aika, Hergul, and you are all people I can think of who if they improve just a little bit, will be capable of getting the trophy. I'm sure there's some people I'm forgetting, there are lots of really good players who just need to take that next step.

A pretty large field then! Do you plan on joining Rufus in the gatekeeping duty, now that youre exalted among your peers?

You know it. It was not easy for me to get the trophy, so I don't want it to be any easier for anyone else trying to get it. I'm excited to see who the next few challengers will be!

Notable Games:

Octane vs Rufus: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=37676286
Neither player had any intel after picks. Rufus seemed a bit better off after getting to 12 in 2 and showing up on a double border to Octane’s +5 turn 3. Octane proceeded to get every prediction perfectly right the next two turns, first defending the double border with barely enough troops while also completing another +5, leaving him at 19 vs 15, before he caught a passive Rufus off guard by defending his double border and not the chokepoint. With enough troops to defend while also breaking Rufus’ bonus on the final turn of the game, the charge for the trophy began.

Octane vs Tornado: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=37572734
The second game of the round robin between the trio currently involved in the trophy charge. Octane had intel on 3 out of 4 of tornado’s starts after picks, and Im fairly sure he deduced the last one as well. The game was over in 5 turns with no bonuses broken, as Octane stayed alive and annoying around tornados picks in the east while laying in wait in the west. Fast forward to turn 5, Octane showed 12 income and tornado realized there was no coming back.

Rufus vs Tornado: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=37618396
The final game of the round robin was over quickly. The weekly report team joked about how aseridith either takes a thousand years or is over in two turns, and this was a case of the latter. Rufus put the combos higher, resulting in a 2 income lead after 2 turns. This, combined Tornado only having 4 armies to his name in the center, ended the game as quickly as it started.

That's it for this week, if you have anything you want to include in a future update contact me or Ralph

Last week's trophy winner remains on top, and with his primary competition out of the picture for now, Octane has managed to take a commanding lead of the ladder. With a lead of almost 200 points, it's likely going to take a while before anyone catches up. That said, we have seen major rating swings in the past, so it's definitely not impossible. Keep in mind that the bigger the lead, the higher the winrate needed to maintain that lead, so any sort of losing streak will hurt so much more.

In the top 10, ONE! looks more dominant than ever, taking up 6 spots as malakkan joins the others to replace Rufus. Octane has kept his win streak going, while Rufus has taken a break from the ladder and left gatekeeping duty to his new peer. We also saw 5 new players getting ranked, and Harmony becoming the most represented clan on the ladder with 9 players.

Player of the Week:
Andrtych

For this week's update (now last week, lol), we're shining the spotlight on andrtych, a consistent presence on the leaderboard and a member of the clan league team at Harmony. Andrtych now has 115 days consecutively ranked on the ladder, and has the 3rd longest of the ongoing streaks. His resilience and dedication are in other words second to none (unless you count the two with longer streaks), which is perfectly emphasised by his tagline "never quit".

Favourite template: Call me old fashioned but I just can't get over Strat 1v1!
Favourite player: My teammate on 2v2 games, Herscher.
Peak Rating: 1668
Peak Rank: 14

Thank you for joining us for the weekly report, andrtych. Harmony is now the clan with the most players on the ladder so we are thrilled to have you representing the new wave!

Thanks for the invite! Harmony players will be a menace on the ladder, beware of us swarming the MTL.

So, andrtych, let's dive into your recent performance. You've had a mix of victories and defeats last week. What's your mindset going forward after this series of games?

My mindset is always the same: Play fast, have fun but also never quit. Having good weeks is a nice boost for my morale, but even when a streak of losses comes it doesn't take a toll on my will to play and come on top (though if I'm being honest I'll never reach THE top).

You secured impressive wins against WeRide and EvBo, including a victory over a clanmate. How does it feel to triumph within your own clan, and what does it signify for your clan dynamics?

It is nice to cross swords with a clanmate, it feels like a friendly game because you play against a person that you communicate with on a regular basis. For some of my mates, I think I can predict the way they play. I guess they can predict my style too.

As the 3rd longest-ranked player on the ladder, you've undoubtedly come across a lot of player strategies on the different templates. Do you have a lesson from one of the templates that stood out to you that you want to share?

Although I am not good in Hannibal at the gates, I reckon covering the whole map while clustering 2 or 3 picks for a Ftb is the best strategy.

Your rating has stabilized above 1600. Do you have any specific goals or milestones you're aiming for in the near future?

My goal in the MTL Is to stabilize my position in the top 20. Well actually to stabilize it I have to actually be in the top 20 haha. It's pretty tough for a casual player like me to do it but hope never dies.

Being part of the clan Harmony, how does the camaraderie and support within your clan contribute to your growth as a player, both individually and as a team?

Despite playing the game for many years, I never was in an active clan like Harmony. The people there helped me get better and enjoy the game more. Shoutout to Bodski and Kalisti for training, Texx for his tourneys + Harmony tourney ladder and Herscher for being a great teammate.

Lastly, what message or advice would you like to share with fellow players who might be navigating similar ups and downs in their ladder journey?

Don't give up! Even through defeats you get better and eventually great wins will make the downs of your journey worth it.

Notable Games:
lawm vs JesJug: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=37648004
lawm's quick rise up the ladder started with his win vs the newcomer, JesJug, on guiroma. Both players opted for a +1 each and plenty of FTBs, while neither picked Illyricum despite its decent starting location setting up a quick finish, and only JesJug covered it. While it depends on the board, covering this can often be the saving grace of a guiroma game! Turn one lawm got +6 and jesjug got +5, but JesJug tried to expand in multiple directions turn 2, despite the players having bordering bonuses, while also opting for the somewhat unconventional 2nd order attack. The result was a broken bonus for JesJug and a massive army advantage for lawm. lawm converted the advantage to a routine victory as JesJug expanded like an octopus in all directions.

Octane vs FiveStarGeneral: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=37690421
A one turn game on biomes! FiveStarGeneral was behind on picks, and went for a hail mary attack-and-blockade into octanes +4 turn one, something Octane predicted. The result: Not managing to enter the bonus, while simultanously removing his only presence in the west. All the while being 5 income behind and with no way to contest octanes income. To new players on the ladder I strongly suggest looking at the picks of this game to try and grasp the picks on biomes.

Octane vs Beren Erchamion: https://www.warzone.com/MultiPlayer?GameID=37707657
Our darling Beren met the (new) gatekeeper Octane on the (new) template Strategic Commanders. Both players made sure to place their commanders in Russia, a note to new players is that the commander is extremely strong and thus 1st and 2nd pick should be chosen with this in mind. Octane had Central Russia and a combo in Africa, while Beren had a combo on West Russia and pick in Antartica that didnt get into play before turn 4-5. Turn 3 both players were on 8, and promptly broke each others bonuses, but Octanes combo meant that he remained on 8 while Beren bumped down to 4 again. Octane stood still with his commander while Beren tried to bait him into a stack, as they both danced around each other while throwing punches. The game ended when Octane had built up a strong army advantage and predicted the travel path of Berens commander, ending it with a turn 8 elimination.

If you have anything you want included in a future update, contact me or MarkusBM.

Ando’s nickname is Odysseus. Ups and downs define him. He is a 2 time Harmony tournament champion, with his first coming before he joined Harmony!

Back when Kcebnroh was running the tournaments, he invited a couple smaller clans to a few tourneys to make them a little bigger and juicier. Clans like Fancy Dot, Sparta, and Ando’s clan at the time, Eagle Fang Dojo. Ando won one of these (#21), scoring 50 points on the HTL. Just barely enough to qualify for the first season’s Finale as the final seed. He enjoyed the event and joined Harmony. Actually, Ando’s story was the inspiration for public Harmony tournaments.

His 2nd win was with Bodski on Volcano Island 2v2 (#46). He showed that he is a great teammate. This was a major factor into him making the Clan League lineup.

Welcome to this week's weekly update, this week has seen a remarkable amount of consistency compared to most other weeks. Octane remains on top, while keeping his winstreak going. Meanwhile, only one player in the top 10 managed to finish more than 5 games this week, that being Juan.

In the clans department, ONE! remains dominant, with 6 members in the top 9. Optimum has 3 people in the top 10, and with Xenophon being a member of Optimum as well as Blitz, the entire top 10 is arguably ONE! and Optimum. In terms of clan memberships on the ladder in general, Optimum is the most participating clan at the moment with 10 people present, followed by Harmony and ONE! at 7 members each. Of all currently ranked players, only two are clanless, those being brain and Bechaa.

Beelzebub, Ralph (Truth Drangon) and Fisherking70 are this weeks big climbers. None went undefeated, but all three managed to win more than they lost, as well as beat players the ladder expected them to lose to.

Master of desaster

The player of the week for this issue is Master of desaster, or mod for those of us too lazy to write out the full name. He recently rejoined the ladder after a short absence while also playing 3 slots for Masters in CL div A. For those of you who dont know him, he is a Eurovision winner, trophy holder on every single ladder that warzone has to offer, and even has a video dedicated to his greatness (I wont post the link, but I do recommend it). In other words: Mod has it all!

Favorite Player: Beren Erchamion
Favorite Template: Elitist Africa
Peak Rating: 2152
Peak Rank: 1

Thank you for taking time out of your wild Eurovision victory celebrations, mod, to join us for the player of the week interview!

You're very welcome! It was indeed very exciting when i learnt of this (almost personal) victory this morning on a warlight discord channel.

Nonsense! My sources definitely tell me you were part of the Swiss Eurovision delegation, so congratulations are in order! But more importantly you just rejoined the Ladder, and seems to have had a rough time (like me). Has the ladder gotten more competitive, or are you simply getting back up to speed?

Busted x2, indeed, there are many strong players on the ladder and it can be said, that many players have a high understanding on most mtl templates. While i can confidently say that i could half ass my games a few years ago and still do decently well, that is obviously no longer the case. With my current focus on cl, there just isn't the time remaining to show my A game on mtl, but cl won't last forever 😉

In other words there is a storm brewing! I like it. Speaking of CL: Masters have been more dominant than Ive ever seen, much thanks to your 8-2 record over 3 slots. Do you think that once CL is over we are in for a similar treat on the top of the MTL leaderboard?

Hopefully there will be more to come than 8-2, sorry zev, can't oblige to your request. I can't talk about Rufus, since i don't know his situation in detail. However, if he rejoins, we can certainly expect first rank to have a heavyweight contender again!
For me, when cl ends, mtl will be the only competition left to try my skills. Claiming i'm spreading too thin won't work at that point!

Then your only excuse left would be rust, and I doubt it works that well for you who have just been kicking names and taking ass in CL! As a bona fide master of the MTL (in both senses of the word), do you have any advice to the young and hopeful who have now joined the ladder?

I think the best advice i can give to players of any skill level is to analyze games after they ended. Don't just skim over the army positions, but question why the other player did something and what you could or should have done differently. Also don't hesitate to ask this to your opponent as well. Warlight has a mostly friendly and helpful community, so people are helping you improve for sure.

Finally, hit us with a prediction for the MTL!

I hope octane will keep his game quality high. I expect him to stay first for at least 40 games now. Imo many things boil down to when rufus rejoins. I will be found in at least the top 3 in mid summer as well.

Notable Games:

We'll be back a bit later with some notable games, Ralph has been busy this week and I don't feel confident in my game analysis to commentate games to the same quality as he does.

That's it for this week, if you have anything you want to include in a future update contact me or Ralph
