Kentucky Level 41 I have noticed a disturbing trend in warlight. My fellow black players and I are socially dead within this community. Our opinions are constantly disregarded. Often times in games once people find out my race I am targeted. What is worse is the attempts to exclude me from the community. Often times I will just play the game for fun and people will report me or call me the N word when they are white or when I am talking to one of my black friends they will report my language as offensive.
Typically warlight has been an extension of civil society. The forums are a place of whiteness where the black body is systemically excluded. If feel as though the issues of Freddie Gray and Eric Garner are systemically excluded from discussion. The reality is this community if founded on fundamentally antiblack principles. Social death is a living reality for all of us non-white warlight players. The warlight community actively participates in the expansion of white supremacy. The agenda being pushed by white supremacists needs to end.
The only solution is an end to warlight. All white players must give up their attempts to control and dominate. The extensions of colonialism promoted by warlight are not neutral. Warlight as a website must end.
--- Dublin Warrior: I will post my reply based on the assumption that "Kentucky" is sober, honest, relatively emotionally stable, not trolling, etc.
First, I am sorry to hear that you, Kentucky, have had these unfortunate experiences.
Second, yes, you will find that I ignore most political/socio-economic discussions here, and on most gaming forums. This is especially true of tragic, and controversial topics, the topics that trolls like the most. This is despite the fact that I have always been very interested in current events. I have been very active in pushing for political and socio-economic change out in the real world for much of my life.
I strongly support repealing most/all of the USA Patriot Act, and bringing civilian review boards to all communities experiencing issues with how and why law enforcement officers interact with the community.
But I don't go around saying that here or most gaming forums for two reasons:
1) I visit here to play a game, not to have a serious discussion, argument, or debate on the real world issues which compel me to seek refuge on gaming websites in the first place.
2) Internet Trolls. -- more on them later.
My commentary on current events, politics, etc. is mostly done on Facebook. Anyone is welcome to look me up: www.facebook.com/dublinwarrior
Third, are many of the maps created by players in this game Euro-centric? Yes they are. The well-documented history of Europe, especially in wars, hard and soft borders, along with a majority of players who identify as white have led to many of the maps being Euro-centric.
I have not seen anything from anyone suggesting that maps need to give special privileges to European maps, countries or territories, nor have I seen anything from anyone that maps from other parts of the world must be based on names and boundaries reflecting on the European Colonial Period, nor have I seen anything from anyone that maps of other parts of the world are not welcome, or that places outside of Europe must be more or less difficult to capture, defend, etc. etc. etc.
Fourth, are there many trolls here? Yes there are. Most of the social internet has yet to find and implement solid measures to stop trolls of any stripe or persuasion without severely curtailing free speech. Unfortunately, a sizable percentage of internet trolls seem to be racist, sexist, homophobic, extreme-right-wing ideologues.
As a long-time member of the Green Party, if I knew how to change that, I would have done it by now... or at least really, really tried.
If you and/or your friends choose to leave Warlight, then Warlight has ended for you/your friends. Not exactly the solution that you wanted, but it gets you out of the place that seems to be giving you so much grief.
I think that especially if you choose to stay, that you should talk to Fizzer about your concerns, specifically and especially with regard to false or exaggerated reports of your use of language.
If you choose to stay, perhaps you should form a clan with like/like-minded players who agree that people of color need a safe group of people to play Warlight with.
I would be interested in joining such a clan, even though I have recently joined my first clan... and they seem like really nice people, so perhaps merely seeking out more open-minded players is a substantial solution to the issues that you and your friends face.
Please keep in mind that much the same issues can be said for female gamers everywhere. I hope I done a reasonable job of speaking up for anyone I see being marginalized, especially when my friends or my clan is involved.
Sincerely, Dublin Warrior
